Problems easy to appear while copper welding

Due to the relatively high thermal conductivity of copper, fast heat transfer rate during welding and overall large heat-affected zone, it is  difficult to fuse the materials together;And because the coefficient of linear expansion of copper is very large, improper fixture clamping strength will make the material deformation when do heated welding.

  1. Prone to appear probes

Another important problem that arises when welding copper is porosity, especially when welding deep melts.The generation of porosity is mainly caused by two situations, one is the diffuse porosity directly generated by the dissolution of hydrogen elements in copper, and the other is the reaction porosity brought about by redox reaction.

Solution

The absorption of infrared laser light by copper at room temperature is about 5%, and the absorption rate can reach about 20% after heating to near the melting point. To realize laser deep fusion welding of copper, it is necessary to increase the laser power density. The use of high power lasers coupled with oscillating welding heads to stir the molten pool and enlarge the keyhole with the beam during deep melting welding are beneficial to gas overflowthus make unstable welding process and less spatter and less micro-probes after welding.
